In a devastating and brutal strike, Russian missile attacks on a military academy and a nearby hospital in the Ukrainian city of Poltava have left the country in shock. The assault on Tuesday resulted in more than 50 deaths and over 200 injuries, marking one of the most horrific events in recent months of the ongoing war. The scenes of destruction were overwhelming, even for a nation accustomed to the chaos and tragedy of conflict.

Rescue workers from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service were on the scene immediately after the strikes, desperately working to save lives and recover the bodies of those who perished. Denys Kliap, the 26-year-old director of Free and Unbreakable, a volunteer rapid response team in Poltava, described the carnage in harrowing detail: bodies pulled from the rubble “without legs, others without arms, some even without heads.” It was a scene of utter destruction, with shattered glass and debris scattered across the area.

The missile strikes targeted the military academy and a neighboring hospital, a dual attack that exacerbated the human toll. Many residents had little time to seek shelter as the sirens warning of the attack went off only moments before the first explosions.

The Missile Strike: A Scene of Unimaginable Horror

The attack unfolded early on Tuesday morning, when Russian missiles struck Poltava, a city about 100 miles from the Russian border. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the missiles were ballistic, known for their supersonic speed, giving residents only minutes to react and find safety. The speed and ferocity of the attack left many with no time to make it to shelters, a fact confirmed by survivors and witnesses.

Markiyan, a 25-year-old Ukrainian soldier present at the time of the strike, recalled the terror of the moments following the sirens. “There was too little time between the air raid alert and the first strike,” he said, still visibly shaken and suffering from minor shrapnel wounds. As explosions rocked the area, he was thrown by the shockwave under a stairwell, struggling to take cover when a second missile hit.

Others in the city shared similar stories of barely escaping with their lives. Witnesses described how the explosions came only seconds after the alarms, leaving residents and soldiers alike scrambling for safety. Many, tragically, did not make it in time.

Casualties and Damage: Hospitals Overwhelmed

The missile strikes caused devastating loss of life and widespread injury. More than 50 people were killed, and over 200 were injured. The local hospitals in Poltava were soon overwhelmed with the influx of wounded victims. As medical teams scrambled to treat those in need, doctors on vacation were urgently called back to work due to the sheer volume of casualties.

Denys Kliap, who had witnessed similar scenes of violence throughout the war, was still struck by the severity of the damage. “When we arrived, the only thing I remember was the pile of bodies scattered all over the territory of the institute,” he said. He also confirmed that many of the victims were caught in the blast while trying to race to shelters, with bodies spread out over a wide area. The destruction extended far beyond the military academy, with nearby buildings showing severe damage, including gaping holes where windows and doors had been blown away.

Adding to the chaos, emergency crews were working amid ongoing air raid sirens, indicating the possibility of further attacks. Mobile air defense units were deployed in the area, ready to counter any additional missile threats.

Conflicting Reports: Were Cadets Targeted?

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, reports began circulating that cadets from the military academy had been lined up outside the building when the missiles struck. This claim was echoed by a Kremlin-appointed official, Vladimir Rogov, who stated that the cadets were gathered for an event at the time of the attack. However, these reports were quickly denied by Ukrainian officials.

Dmytro Lazutkin, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s defense ministry, appeared on national television to refute the claims, stating that no parade or ceremony was taking place when the missiles hit. According to Lazutkin, classes were in session at the time, and the victims were struck as they tried to reach shelter.

Kliap, who was present at the scene, supported this view. In a phone interview, he expressed doubt that there had been any kind of organized gathering. From his observations, the victims were spread out over a large area, and many appeared to have been caught in the blast while running for cover. “I doubt it was a gathering,” he said. “And from what we’ve heard, everyone says there wasn’t one.”

Poltava: A City No Stranger to War

Poltava, a city with a population of around 450,000, is no stranger to the ravages of war. Its history is deeply intertwined with conflict, particularly the famous Battle of Poltava in 1709, which saw Russian forces defeat Swedish troops and Ukrainian Cossacks. That battle marked a significant turning point in European history and cemented Russia’s dominance in the Baltic region. The modern city of Poltava, much of which was destroyed during World War II, has since been rebuilt and is now a hub of tech development in Ukraine.

Tuesday’s missile strikes, however, represent a new chapter in the city’s wartime history. Residents are now left to grapple with the immediate aftermath of the attack, as well as the broader implications of living under constant threat from Russian missile strikes.

The Ongoing Struggle: Relief and Recovery Efforts

In the hours and days following the attack, relief efforts in Poltava have been in full force. Emergency workers continue to search for survivors among the rubble, and Kliap’s team of volunteers has been instrumental in assisting with rescue operations. His group has been working tirelessly to board up windows, provide temporary shelter for those whose homes were damaged, and offer hot meals to emergency crews laboring through the night.

“The hospitals are full,” Kliap said, noting that the situation remains critical. Local hospitals have reached their capacity, and doctors are working around the clock to treat the injured. Many of those injured in the blast suffered severe trauma, and medical teams are doing their best to stabilize them under difficult conditions.

Relief workers are also focused on providing support to civilians who have lost their homes or whose properties were heavily damaged by the blast. With many unable to return to their homes, temporary measures are being put in place to prevent further damage from the elements and to ensure that displaced residents have a place to stay.

President Zelensky’s Response: A Call for Unity

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack in a public statement, expressing his outrage at the senseless loss of life and calling for continued international support. Zelensky emphasized that the missile strikes were carried out with advanced ballistic missiles, underscoring the threat that these weapons pose to every part of Ukraine.

“Russia is taking away our most valuable asset, our lives,” said Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, in a poignant message of condolence to the families of those killed in the attack.

This latest assault is part of a broader campaign by Russia to target critical infrastructure and military facilities in Ukraine, a strategy that has caused immense suffering to both civilians and military personnel. Zelensky’s government has repeatedly called on the international community to provide greater support in the form of air defense systems to counter these ongoing missile strikes.

The Road Ahead: Rebuilding and Resilience

As Poltava and Ukraine as a whole continue to cope with the devastation wrought by these strikes, the focus is now on recovery and resilience. In the immediate term, efforts are centered on caring for the wounded, recovering the dead, and rebuilding what has been destroyed. But the broader question remains: How can Ukraine protect itself from further attacks like this one?

For the people of Poltava, this tragedy will be remembered not only for the lives lost but also for the way the community came together in the face of unimaginable horror. Rescue workers, volunteers, and civilians alike have united to support one another, reflecting the resilience that has defined Ukraine throughout this conflict.

While Poltava may be no stranger to war, the events of Tuesday serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing toll that this war is taking on the nation. As air raid sirens continue to sound, the people of Ukraine remain steadfast in their determination to defend their homeland and rebuild from the ashes.
