According to Iranian media, blasts close to General Qassem Soleimani’s grave have left at least 103 people dead and 141 injured.

What is known about the fatal explosions that occurred in Iran on Wednesday, as well as what is still unknown:

• According to the authorities, the twin bombings left 211 people injured and at least 103 dead.

• Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, this attack is the bloodiest to have occurred in Iran.

• After an initial assault, militants frequently utilize this strategy to harm both civilians and emergency responders. The second explosion happened around 20 minutes after the first.

• The attack took place in conjunction with events honoring the fourth anniversary of the death of Revolutionary Guard general Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the elite Quds Force, at the hands of an American drone strike in neighboring Iraq. Long queues of people had assembled for the celebration when the blasts happened close to his resting site.

• No organization has taken credit for the attack in Kerman.

• Targeted murders and sabotage attacks that were allegedly carried out by Israel have occurred in Iran. But unlike Wednesday’s attack, previous assaults did not involve bombings that claimed a large number of lives.

• In the past, Sunni extremist organizations, such as the Islamic State group, have carried out significant assaults in Iran, a country with a Shiite majority, killing civilians.
